Mayrhofen ski resort

In the heart of Austria’s Zillertal Valley lies Mayrhofen. Whether you’re dreaming of carving early-morning turns on freshly groomed runs or chasing powder through untouched backcountry, you can do it all here. Beginners can build their confidence around the Ahorn mountain, where you’ll find some cruisy blues for practising those turns. Got a few trips under your belt? Head for the Eggalm peak, home to a network of long, tree-lined runs. And you can’t leave without testing your mettle on the Harakiri – the steepest slope in Austria. If you’re a master of moguls, the Devil’s Run is known for being the bumpiest black. The icing on the cake? The Penken snow park. Here, you can try out your tricks on the kickers, rails and boxes spread across eight lines.

Mayrhofen itself is as traditional as it gets. The streets are lined with chalets carved from wood and stone, boutique shops selling all the latest gear and local restaurants. Après action is easy to come by too. Start on the slopes at the Pilzbar, where Europop tunes blast out all afternoon. Then, continue the party until the early hours at the Scotland Yard Pub.

The location

Set within Austria’s Zillertal Valley, Mayrhofen’s around 60km east of Innsbruck. That means you can go from your flight to making first tracks in no time. It’s surrounded by towering Tyrolean peaks, so picturesque panoramas are a given too. The town itself sits at 630m and is a great gateway to the Zillertal Alps and the Hintertux Glacier — one of Europe’s few ski areas open year-round. The centre is compact and pedestrian-friendly, and offers a wide range of amenities, from supermarkets to rental shops. Plus, most hotels and apartments are within a short walk of lifts.

Adventure for all ages

Mayrhofen’s a winter wonderland for families. Little ones can glide down gentle slopes on the Ahorn, build snowmen or race down toboggan runs. Off the mountain, the Erlebnisbad swimming complex’s your ticket to splash-tastic fun. Or how about taking off on a snowshoeing experience together?

No skis? No problem!

Non-skiers will never run out of things to do around these parts. Glide across the natural ice rink at Ahorn or join a guided winter hike and soak up those vast valley views. Fancy something more lowkey? Dip into the shops for a spot of retail therapy or unwind at one of the nearby spas.

Alpine flavours

Kickstart your morning with fresh pastries and strong coffee from Bäckerei Felder or sample Tyrolean cheeses at the village market. Mountain huts serve warming bowls of goulash, knödel and fondue – perfect for lunch. And there’s no better way to finish the day than with a mulled wine or hot chocolate.
