Val Gardena ski resort
Tucked away in the heart of the Dolomites, Val Gardena’s an Italian icon for good reason. Part of the vast Dolomiti Superski area, it connects to over 500km of pistes. The valley itself stretches for about 25km, linking three main villages. Ortisei’s a place where wooden chalets, ornate churches and cosy cafés line snow-dusted streets. The lifts rise directly from the centre to Seceda and Alpe di Siusi, so you can maximise your time on the mountain. Santa Cristina is a smaller spot, where you’ll find the Saslong World Cup Downhill run – one of the most famous blacks in the Alps. Looking for something a bit livelier? You’re a match for Selva di Val Gardena. It sits right on the Sella Ronda circuit – a must-do loop that lets you ski through four valleys in a single day!
If you’re just finding your feet, Ortisei is your best base. The Alpe di Siusi plateau’s home to long, gentle runs and the ski schools here are superb. For intermediates, start with the slopes from Seceda to Ortisei, a sweeping network of scenic reds. Then, test your mettle on the Saslong World Cup Downhill run. Snowboarders are well catered for too! Terrain parks at Piz Sella and Seceda keep freestyle fans entertained, while natural rollers and banked turns make carving a dream.
The location
Cradled in northern Italy’s South Tyrol, Val Gardena stretches for 25km through the Dolomites, surrounded by the majestic Sassolungo, Sella and Odle peaks. The valley’s three main villages are linked by an efficient lift and bus network, allowing skiers and boarders to explore without the hassle. Off the slopes, Val Gardena’s villages ooze alpine authenticity, and its restaurants celebrate both mountain comfort and Mediterranean flair. When it comes to après, you’ll want to do as the locals do and stop for a late-afternoon drink at Baita Ciampac or Comici Hut. Luislkeller in Selva buzzes with energy, while Tubladel in Ortisei and Rino in Santa Cristina serve up hearty alpine fare.

Freestylers can hit the snow parks for a real test of endurance and skill, and the extensive stretch of ice and powder will keep you going for hours. With the huge range of red runs, you’ll be very well catered for if you’re an intermediate.
After hours
Selva Gardena is a particularly animated resort after the sun goes down, with its vibrant choice of bars and nightlife-friendly eateries. It wouldn’t be après-ski without cold pints and warming dishes, but there are also a few live music sessions to enjoy. The local pear brandy is a highlight, too.
