Jingle all the way to Munich’s cluster of fabulous Christmas markets. We’re talking rows of wood-clad stalls teeming with edible treats, quaint trinkets, and fairy lights. Marienplatz hosts the oldest and most historic of the lot, while you can piece together your own nativity scene at Kripperlmarkt Manger Market.

Full-on festive cheer

You can really feel fully festive in Munich, thanks to its classic German Christmas appeal. Tollwood Winter Festival showcases fab food and fun performances, so it’s a great post-market venue. Decorated shopping streets, carol singing and organ recitals, ice-skating, and more awaits, so there’ll be plenty to get you into the spirit.

Bavaria’s capital

Munich is a massive city, split into eight characterful districts. This is a place with an arty quarter, BMW Museum, and streets where oompah bands play. Make a beeline for Marienplatz with its towering Gothic buildings, then the stunning Nymphenburg Palace. The Englischer Garten and Hofgarten make ideal strolling spots, too.
