Nordkette ski resort

Convenience top of your list when booking a ski getaway? You’re a match for the mountains of Nordkette in Austria. Perched above the city of Innsbruck, you can go from sightseeing to the slopes in no time. All you need to do is hop on the Innsbruck Nordkettenbahnen cable car from the city centre. Plus, the journey up is all part of the fun. Get ready to soak up the 360° views of the Alps and the Karwendel Nature Park. Once you reach the top, you’ll find six slopes for different skill levels. Freestyle fan? Head to the Nordkette Skylinepark – home to kickers, rails and lots more. The Seegrube area offers gentler groomers with sweeping views over Innsbruck. Here, you can work on your turns and enjoy the sunlit terraces. Refuel with hearty alpine dishes like kaspressknödel (dumplings) and Kaiserschmarrn (shredded pancakes).

Piste pro? You’ll want to tick off the Hafelekar area, which sits at over 2200m. It’s known for having some of Europe’s steepest slopes, if you fancy testing your mettle. The panoramas are worth the trip alone! There’s also stacks in store for freeriders.

The location

Seeking maximum mountain time with minimum travel? Then you’ve landed in the right place. Nordkette forms the southernmost boundary of the Karwendel range, directly overlooking Innsbruck, in Austria’s Tyrol region. Its accessibility is one of its defining features. The journey from Innsbruck’s Old Town takes around twenty minutes thanks to the Hungerburg funicular and the Seegrube and Hafelekar cable cars. This seamless link makes it one of the most urban-connected ski areas in the world. The area is part of the Karwendel Nature Park, one of the largest protected alpine zones, which helps preserve its rugged, untouched character.

Après at altitude

When it comes to après activities, Nordkette packs plenty into its small ski area. The IGLOO Bar and Seegrube terrace turn sunlit afternoons into lively mountain hangouts with DJs, drinks and unmatched views over Innsbruck. And the best part? Within minutes, you can glide back down to Innsbruck’s bars to keep the evening going.

Strudel in the snow

Bit of a foodie? The Seegrube Restaurant is a highlight. Think panoramic windows and hearty Tyrolean dishes. Skiers and boarders drop in for käsespätzle, gröstl, soups and strudel served with postcard panoramas. It’s the perfect mid-mountain pause before returning to the slopes.

Don’t forget your camera

Nordkette is one of the most photogenic ski areas in Europe. Whether you’re capturing action shots of friends dropping into steep terrain or pausing for super scenes, a trip here’s sure to fill your camera roll. From the Seegrube terrace, you can frame the entire city in a single wide shot!
