Overview

Forward-thinking and historic all at once, Bristol’s one of the UK’s most exciting cities. Elegant pastel-coloured townhouses, a vibrant harbourside and bright street art create a lovely backdrop for exploring. But it’s the creative, innovative spirit of the city that really sets it apart.

Brunel’s best bits

Isambard Kingdom Brunel, 19th-century engineer and hero of the Industrial Revolution, left some of his magic here in Bristol. Wander across the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, spanning the Avon Gorge, before visiting the SS Great Britain down at the docks. This historically important steamship gives an interactive and engaging glimpse back in time.

Culture-stuffed creative scene

Spy works from the city’s son, Banksy, dotted throughout the streets, along with other colourful murals. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, swing by the harbourside, where independent restaurants and bars dominate the postcode. Cargo’s the place for street food, while The Bristol Hotel offers waterside dining.

Close by countryside

It’s not just city life you can experience in Bristol. Rolling hills are within easy reach, whichever direction you head in. Set off north-east for the quintessential villages and outstanding pubs of the Cotswolds. Love walking? Head south to Somerset to amble among the dramatic gorges and flower-filled meadows of the Mendip Hills.

Clifton Suspension Bridge

Spectacularly set in the cliffs of the Avon Gorge, the Clifton Suspension Bridge is a must-see while in Bristol! You can walk across this 19th-century gem on foot but it’s also worth visiting neighbouring Clifton Observatory at sunset to get a glimpse of the bridge looking its best.

Calbot Tower

For sweeping views of the city all the way down to the water, make for Calbot Tower. Tucked into Brandon Hill’s parkland, this 19th-century tower’s got twisting steps all the way to the top, where you can drink in the green-tinged vistas. Oh, and it’s free to enter!

SS Great Britain

History fan? Stop by SS Great Britain, a steamship-cum-museum! This award-winning visitor attraction allows you to explore the world’s first great ocean liner. Step inside the Dock Office, get a snap in the Victorian photographic studio and enjoy a fab view of the ship below the sea!
