Overview

Pretty Innsbruck, capital of the Austrian state of Tyrol, shines bright as a firm favourite all year round. Whether you go when it’s snow-dusted or sun-kissed, the inner city and its charming old town offer plenty to see, do and eat, all with a dash of Austrian flair. Hop on the Nordkette funicular and witness the beauty unfold, and you’ll soon see how it combines urban with alpine.

Astonishing attractions

There are lots of enchanting landmarks to behold in the city. We’re talking the epic Golden Roof and Stadtturm watchtower, plus the showstopping Imperial Palace. Ambras Castle is another winner for history buffs. When you need to refuel, dine on smoked bacon, creamy cheeses and golden-crumbed schnitzels, all washed down with ice-cold beer. You may want to look into getting a Welcome Card, which would make certain public transport and activities free (but check those T&Cs!).

Superb ski

Despite its appeal in the summer, Innsbruck is surrounded by nine renowned resorts, including Seefeld, Mayrhofen and Alpbach, which create great skiing for all skill levels. Let sweeping, snow-dusted valleys be your playground and make the most of chilled-out blue and daring red runs. The area’s known for its snowboarding and even hosting winter sports games. It’s also been widely praised for the Bergisel Ski Jump.

Summertime in terrific Tyrol

The Tyrol region has bags going on. Its best views are showcased across its majestic mountainous stretches and cycling routes. Luscious lakeside hikes in summer are fab for burning off those Austrian feasts. Into cultural gems? You can’t beat the Tyrolean State Museum back in Innsbruck. Why not seek out the glittering Swarovski Crystal Worlds in Wattens?
