Thousands of runners braved a chilly morning on Sunday to help ensure older people are kept warm this winter. A record 7,380 participants pounded the Leeds pavements for the 2012 Abbey Dash.

The event, sponsored by Jet2.com was raising cash for Age UK’s Spread The Warmth campaign and its befriending service.

Under blue skies, the biggest-ever field of runners streamed through the start on a crisp autumn morning to tackle the notoriously fast course.

Following a mass warm-up in Victoria Gardens, participants headed down Kirkstall Road, out to Kirkstall Abbey and then back to finish on the Headrow outside Leeds Town Hall.

A team of 21 employees from Jet2.com participated in the race to help raise cash for the cause. Jet2.com’s Managing Director Ian Doubtfire said: “Our team of 21 are from across the company, including cabin crew, pilots and head office staff.

“We obviously feel part of Yorkshire so wanted to support Yorkshire charities and Age UK is an important cause in the local area. Staff have been baking cakes and selling them in the office to raise more money for the cause.”

“We did the race two years ago and it’s great because there are so many people there on the day cheering for you. It’s great to see all of our employees running together as a team and it’s really important to be supporting the local community.”

The Jet2.com team finished with an impressive average time of 53mins 45seconds which works out at a lightening fast 11.19km per hour!

All 7380 runners we’re handed a Jet2.com Leeds Abbey Dash t-shirt at the end of the race, helping to raise much needed awareness and support for Age Uk. Once again, a big thank you to everyone involved.
