With Jet2holidays now offering its biggest ever choice of New York city breaks – flying direct from five local airports - there’s a mega winter experience awaiting you in the Big Apple. Of course, hitting the Black Friday sales or sampling the Christmas Markets can work up quite an appetite – but luckily New York is a culinary metropolis catering for all tastes. Here’s our tips for the essential places to eat during your NYC city break.

Katz’s Delicatessen

A legendary haunt for New York foodies, Katz’s deli is situated on the Lower East Side in Manhattan, on the southwest corner of Houston and Ludlow streets. Famous for its pastrami sandwiches and hot dogs – both considered the best in the city – Katz’s is a true staple of New York’s dining scene and will certainly be familiar to film fans.

The deli was used for that scene in the 1989 romantic comedy When Harry met Sally and the famous table used by Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal is now marked by a sign that reads “Where Harry met Sally…hope you have what she had! Enjoy!”

Katz also played host to the famously tense scene in the classic crime drama Donnie Brasco, when Johnny Depp’s character meets with an FBI contact.

What to have: The Reuben sandwich. Corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut, grilled between slices of rye bread.

Shake Shack

Burger connoisseurs travelling to New York this winter are spoilt for choice. Jet2CityBreaks customers could cover a whole host of the best burger joints during a 3 or 4 day trip, though it’s worth sticking with one of the city’s most revered outlets – Shake Shack. The fast food chain started out life as a food cart inside Madison Square Park, eventually expanding to a kiosk-style restaurant within the same grounds in 2004.

The chain now has numerous outlets across the city, but its original restaurant arguably remains its best and diners can enjoy lunch in the bustling park under the shadow of the historic Flatiron building.

What to have: The Shack Burger with crinkle cut fries. Cheeseburger topped with lettuce, tomato and ShackSauce.

Momofoku Noodle Bar

Visitors to New York could be forgiven for ignoring the unassuming Momofoku Noodle Bar on First Avenue. Established by the legendary chef David Chang – an icon of the New York dining scene – the restaurant serves innovative Asian-American fusion food based on Chang’s heritage and experiences. The steamed pork buns are a thing of legend in the city.

What to have: Steamed pork buns. Roasted pork belly with hoisin, cured cucumbers and onions.
