On Sunday 14th February, Air Cadet Charlotte Wilkinson came to spend the day with us at Jet2.com to see how an airline operates. The day started off in the check-in hall at Leeds Bradford Airport where Charlotte watched our friendly staff quickly checking in the customers, tagging their bags and placing them onto the baggage belt ready for the first part of their journey, not forgetting to wish them a lovely holiday!

Next stop for Charlotte was out onto the ramp to see the aircraft being prepared and watch those bags, which had previously been checked in, being loaded safely onto the aircraft. Then it was time for the exciting bit and Charlotte made her way into the cabin to see the crew complete their pre-flight checks to ensure that the aircraft was ready to our high standards to accept our customers on aboard.

Charlotte then spent time with Captain Duncan Hastie as he got underway with his pre-flight checks. This began outside with a thorough walk round of the aircraft to check the tyres, landing gear, engines and other external parts. Once back inside, Captain Hastie showed Charlotte how the aircraft systems are prepared, the instruments checked and how the route that was about to be flown is inputted into the navigation computer. Charlotte was even able to sit in the Captain’s seat to get a feel for what it would be like to fly one of our aircraft!

Next it was a quick trip in the crew bus to the Air Traffic Control Tower where Charlotte watched as the aircraft made initial contact with the tower and was guided onto the runway ready to be cleared for departure. Once airborne, she watched them being handed over to the Controllers in radar room whose job it is to ensure the safe passage of the aircraft whilst en-route to its destination.

Final stop was a visit to the Operations Control Centre at Jet2.com. Here, Charlotte saw how the flying programme was planned and controlled across the whole of the Jet2.com network including Operations, Crewing, Maintenance Control, Flight Planning and Customer Operations.

The General Manager Operations Control said “Charlotte’s Aunt made contact with myself as she is really interested in following a career in aviation and hopes one day to become a pilot. It was a pleasure showing Charlotte around, she certainly gained a huge amount from her visit with us and this has merely confirmed her passion for aviation. Her Aunt commented that Charlotte had a fantastic day and created memories that she wouldn’t forget.”
