Holidaymakers booking cheap flights to Corfu with Jet2.com are seeing a profusion of new ventures launched by local entrepreneurs, keen to show there is an alternative to mass-packaged tourism.
The Greeks are nothing if not skilled innovators, and new initiatives in tourism are being launched that make the most of the rich supply of local resources on Corfu.
One such entrepreneur is Alex Christou, an IT specialist who moved back to Corfu with his wife Christina in 2009. Spotting a gap in the market for economically friendly tourism on Corfu, they began looking for a ‘safe place’ in which they could be self-sufficient and raise a family. Together with a friend, and with the help of new and established New Age centres, they launched an online network called ‘Green Corfu’ to promote alternative holidays on the island.
Corfu with a Conscience
Members of the Green Corfu scheme, which include a microbrewery and an organic holiday retreat in the Korission wetlands, offer a wide variety of activities, from New Age therapies and meditation, to hiking, sailing and watersports.
The co-operative also organises sustainability conferences and promotes Corfiot wines, crafts and foodstuffs, encouraging local businesses – and visitors to the island - to sample local wares after arriving on flights to Corfu.
