Jet2.com has reached a major sustainability milestone at Newcastle Airport, with all of its owned ground service equipment (GSE) at the airport now operating on 100% electric power. 

The achievement forms part of Jet2.com’s longterm strategy to reduce emissions across its ground operations and to improve airside air quality. The full transition at Newcastle Airport represents another step towards the company’s ambition to achieve a 99% reduction in emissions from its owned GSE by 2035. 

Jet2.com has been investing in the electrification of a wide range of airside vehicles and equipment across its network, including baggage tractors, belt loaders, steps, ground power units, highloaders, and crew transport.  

Switching to electric GSE brings a number of benefits, including: 

• Significantly reduced carbon emissions 

• Lower noise levels in operational areas 

• Improved local air quality for colleagues, customers, and airport communities 

• Modern, efficient equipment supporting reliable operations 

This milestone reflects the strong partnership between Jet2.com and Newcastle Airport, who have worked closely together to ensure the right infrastructure, charging capacity, and operational support are in place to enable a full transition. 

Paul Southall, Head of Sustainability of Jet2, said: “Reaching 100% electric GSE at Newcastle Airport is a major achievement and demonstrates our continued commitment to reducing emissions on the ground, which is just one part of our bold sustainability strategy. We are investing heavily in the electrification of our fleet and will continue to work closely with our airport partners to deliver these meaningful improvements across our network.” 

As part of it's On the Ground sustainability pillar, Jet2.com continues to roll out electrified ground operations across the UK, alongside complementary initiatives such as allelectric crew buses and an electric car salaryexchange scheme for colleagues. 

The company will now build on the success at Newcastle Airport as it progresses similar programmes across its other UK bases.
